Type 201 and Type 316 stainless steel have different properties and common uses.
Type 201
A low-nickel stainless steel with good corrosion resistance in mild environments.
Typical uses: hose clamps, cookware and architectural trim.
Type 316
Contains molybdenum for greater corrosion resistance in more aggressive environments, including those exposed to chlorides.
Typical uses: marine equipment, food processing and medical applications.
